Arc Fault Interrupters
This is a fairly new thing in the last couple of code changes. We are required to install them in your breaker panel in the Twin Cities we add any new outlets, switches or lights. They protect homes from fires. AFI’s sense if there is an arc on the circuit. If you have a bad connection in your electricity somewhere or have a bad cord or a bad plug-in then they will trip off. I have seen a few times where a fire could have been prevented by having an AFI circuit breaker. When you smell the plastic burning smell an AFI would have tripped it off before a fire starts. When you hear a buzzing from an outlet, it would have tripped it. The current code requires electricians to install them in every room that is not a garage, bath, basement or kitchen. This is a worth-while upgrade for any house!
